Will used the tools and vocabulary of cake decoration to re-imagine the bag as a frosted confection. The bag is adorned with archival art materials using a process he has developed for his recent sculptural work.

As a young artist living in New York, maturing in the context of the aids pandemic of the 1980’s and 90’s, I watched in fear as many friends and colleagues suffered and died of this horrific disease. As one who luckily survived those terrifying years, it’s an actual privilege to be alive and have the opportunity to make, imagine and dream. It’s an honor participating in the 2×2 event. It gives me great joy knowing that something I make can help support the great work that Howard and Cindy do with this event every year!

It was such fun to help design a Nancy Gonzalez bag for TWO x TWO that will benefit the Dallas Museum of Art and amfAR. I imagined something tough but luxe—like text embossed on white Nappa—for these worthy organizations. I wanted to address only the interior with PROTECT ME FROM WHAT I WANT. It was so easy to work with Santiago Barberi Gonzalez.

In this work, I tried to combine my passion for tattooing and my interest in contemporary art. Generally, my work is influenced by ancient traditions of corporate art, Mexican graphic art and popular entertainment.

It is an honor to have been invited to help support the valuable work of the amfAR Foundation for AIDS Research and excellence of the Dallas Museum of Art. Collaborating with Nancy Gonzalez on the tote bag was a real pleasure and a great opportunity to create a “wearable” sculpture.

As this year’s honoree, I am humbled to be able to contribute to the handbag project with Nancy Gonzalez, which will benefit TWO x TWO. I’ve long admired the work the company does. The handbags are artworks in and of themselves. I’m thrilled to be asked to collaborate in making a special new work for this cause.

It was exciting to design the bag. It is double sided, an evening mood with the crocodile motif and a summery day situation on the other side. I love the crocodile motif at the base, it is Santi’s logo. I would suggest a white attire or one with blue highlights to go with the bag. Sapphires and diamond jewelry with high platforms will look good…

The floral pattern that adorns Mickalene Thomas’s enamel painted Nancy Gonzalez bag will be recognizable to those who have viewed her textural and lush portraits. The design is based on the couch upholstery from Thomas’s grandmother’s home, and this nostalgic motif is frequently used in the background of her paintings.
